When to choose a pedestal sink
for your bathroom

When you are considering renovating your bathroom there are many things that you need to consider. This ranges from color schemes to the type of materials used in construction. Pedestal sinks are making a come back, but they should not be used in all situations.

Considering that most bathrooms are not very large, space is always at a premium. When considering what kind of sink to install into your bathroom you need to allow not only for function and style, but also for practicality.

You might like the look of a pedestal sink but will it really suit the needs of your bathroom? If you are remodeling or renovating, are you looking at creating more storage space, more floor space or just updating fixtures? These all determine whether a specific model or design is right for your needs.

Pedestal sinks were a popular addition to bathrooms built before the 1950’s. They typified the elegance of the era and were focal points of the bathroom. Pedestal sinks are particularly effective in period style homes because the bathrooms in these houses are often much larger than modern houses.

The visual impact of the sink unit is most pronounced in bathrooms where other period fixtures have been used, such as a claw foot bath and old-fashioned lights.

Pedestal sinks can also be used in small bathrooms because they do not require large amounts of bench space. This would only be a suitable option if you had storage space in other areas in the house, such as a linen cupboard near the bathroom.

One of the few downsides of including a pedestal sink in your bathroom design is the inherent lack of storage. As alluded to by the name, these sink systems include only the pedestal for the sink to sit on and the basin itself. There is little room for accessories on the basin and certainly no storage space below the basin. There is usually a mirrored cabinet above the basin and storage elsewhere in the room. This design limits the use of a pedestal sink to bathrooms where there is adequate room for alternative storage.

It is wise not to install a pedestal sink in modern bathrooms. While they can sometimes be incorporated into contemporary bathroom, without careful consideration of your room design they can look out of place. If you don’t have a period style home it would be a good idea to approach a professional and seek advice on the suitability of a pedestal sink for your bathroom.

There have been some attempts to bring the pedestal sink into the 21st Century, and while the these sinks can be manufactured with new materials, there is no way of getting around the fact that they are used predominantly for visual effect and afford little practical benefit to the bathroom.

Like many fashions, pedestal sinks have been popular, have been rejected by the mainstream population, but have made a successful comeback. They can add a touch of nostalgia to an otherwise plain room and are reminiscent of bygone days.
